  • 2 pounds potatoes, thinly sliced Use starchy potatoes like Russets for a creamier texture.
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar or Gruyère) You can swap for mozzarella or a dairy-free cheese.
  • 2 tablespoons butter Dot on top before baking.
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • to taste Salt and pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • for garnish Fresh herbs (optional) Use thyme or rosemary for unique flavors.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a greased baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes.
  • In a bowl, mix the heavy cream with salt, pepper, and garlic powder if using. Pour half of this mixture over the potatoes.
  • Add half of the cheese and some onions on top.
  • Repeat the layers with the remaining potatoes, cream, cheese, and onions.
  • Dot with butter on top.

Baking

  • Cover the dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.
  • Garnish with fresh herbs if desired and serve hot.

Notes

To store, keep in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days. For longer storage, freeze after cooling completely.
