  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs Use room temperature.
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour Can be substituted for gluten-free blend.
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
  • In a mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  • Stir in the vanilla extract.
  • In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk, until just combined.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top.
  • Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

Best enjoyed with a dusting of powdered sugar, whipped cream, fresh berries, or a drizzle of chocolate sauce. Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days or freeze for up to three months.
