Ingredients

For the Sandwich

  • 4 slices sourdough bread Crispy and fresh
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter Divided for frying
  • 1 medium pear, thinly sliced Choose a firm variety
  • 1 medium apple, thinly sliced Use a crisp apple
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced For caramelizing
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese Can substitute with gouda or mozzarella
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar For added flavor
  • Salt To taste
  • Black pepper To taste

Instructions

Caramelize the Onion

  • In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter.
  • Add the thinly sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 10 minutes until they are golden brown and softened.
  • Add the balsamic vinegar and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes. Remove from the skillet and set aside.

Assemble the Sandwich

  • In the same skillet, melt the remaining tablespoon of butter over medium heat.
  • On two slices of sourdough bread, layer half of the cheddar cheese, followed by the caramelized onions, apple slices, and pear slices.
  • Top with the remaining cheddar cheese and cover with the other two slices of bread.

Grill the Sandwich

  • Place one sandwich in the skillet and grill on one side for about 4-5 minutes, or until golden brown.
  • Carefully flip the sandwich using a spatula and grill the other side for another 4-5 minutes, ensuring the cheese melts thoroughly.
  • Repeat the grilling process for the second sandwich.
  • Once both sandwiches are done, remove from the skillet, let them cool for a minute, then slice in half and serve warm.

Notes

Pairs wonderfully with tomato soup or a fresh side salad. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days or freeze wrapped tightly for up to a month.
