Equipment

  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Knife or Pizza Cutter
  • Pastry brush
  • Cooling rack

Ingredients

  • 2 sheets puff pastry, thawed
  • 1/3 to 1/2 cup filling of choice (see options below)
  • 1 egg, beaten with a splash of water (for egg wash)
  • powdered sugar (for sweet topping)
  • sesame seeds or grated Parmesan (for savory topping)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Lay one puff pastry sheet flat.
  • Spread your chosen filling evenly over the first sheet, leaving a small border. Top with the second sheet and press lightly to seal.
  • Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, trim into a large triangle. Cut horizontal slits on each side for branches, leaving the center intact. Twist each branch. Use trimmed scraps to cut a star and place it on top.
  • Brush with egg wash. Bake for 18–22 minutes until puffed and golden brown.
  • Cool slightly. Dust sweet versions with powdered sugar or top savory versions with Parmesan. Serve warm and let guests pull apart the branches.

Notes

Use cold puff pastry for best shape and rise. A thin filling layer prevents leaks. You can prep the tree ahead and bake fresh for guests. Sweet or savory, it's a guaranteed holiday hit.
