Equipment

  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Pastry brush for egg wash
  • Knife or Pizza Cutter for cutting strips
  • skewers or pretzel sticks optional for tree trunks

Ingredients

  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
  • 3 tbsp basil pesto (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 2 tbsp grated Parmesan cheese (optional)
  • sesame seeds or poppy seeds (optional topping)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment. Roll out the puff pastry to smooth any creases.
  • Spread pesto evenly over the pastry. Sprinkle with Parmesan if using.
  • Cut pastry into 1-inch strips. Twist and fold each into a tree shape. Insert skewer or pretzel stick for the trunk.
  • Place trees on baking sheet. Brush with egg wash. Sprinkle with sesame or poppy seeds if desired.
  • Bake 12–15 minutes until puffed and golden. Cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Keep puff pastry chilled until ready to use. Don't overload with pesto to avoid sogginess. Add Parmesan for a savory boost. Freeze shaped trees for later and bake directly from frozen when needed.
