Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Electric mixer
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Rubber spatula
  • Cake pans (9-inch round)
  • Parchment paper
  • Wire rack
  • Offset spatula (optional)

Ingredients

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk, room temperature
  • 1 tsp white vinegar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ¾ cups granulated sugar
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp purple gel food coloring (adjust as needed)
  • 16 oz cream cheese, softened
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 4 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • 1 pinch salt (for frosting)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans, then line the bottoms with parchment paper for easy removal.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  • In a small bowl, mix buttermilk, vinegar, vanilla, and purple food coloring until evenly blended.
  • Cream together the butter, oil, and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each.
  • Add dry ingredients in three additions, alternating with the buttermilk mixture. Mix just until combined.
  • Divide batter evenly between pans. Bake 25–30 minutes. Cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to racks.
  • Beat cream cheese and butter until fluffy. Add vanilla and salt. Gradually mix in powdered sugar until smooth.
  • Level cooled cakes. Spread frosting on one layer, then top with second. Frost top and sides evenly.
  • Chill cake 30 minutes before serving. Garnish with edible flowers or sprinkles as desired.

Notes

For best color, use gel food coloring. Always bring ingredients to room temperature for smooth blending. You can make cake layers in advance and freeze them. Level the cake before frosting for a clean look. Chill before slicing for cleaner cuts.
