Equipment

  • Large deep skillet or Dutch oven
  • Sharp chef's knife
  • Cutting board
  • Mandoline slicer (optional)
  • Garlic press (optional)

Ingredients

  • 14 oz Kielbasa or smoked sausage sliced
  • 1 small head of green cabbage shredded
  • 1 small yellow onion diced
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard optional
  • 2 tsp brown sugar optional
  • 1-2 tsp hot sauce optional
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup carrots peeled and sliced (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Ingredients:

  • Slice the sausage into pieces.
  • Shred or thinly slice the cabbage.
  • Dice the onion and mince the garlic.

Brown the Sausage:

  • Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add 1 tbsp of olive oil.
  • Add the sausage slices and cook until browned on all sides (about 5-7 minutes). Remove and set aside.

Sauté Aromatics:

  • Lower the heat to medium, add the remaining olive oil, and sauté the onion and garlic until fragrant and soft (about 3-5 minutes).

Cook the Cabbage:

  • Add the shredded cabbage and chicken broth to the skillet. Stir to combine.
  • Season with salt, pepper, and optional ingredients like mustard, brown sugar, or hot sauce. Cover and let the cabbage cook for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Combine and Heat Through:

  • Return the browned sausage to the skillet and mix with the cooked cabbage. Cook for an additional 5 minutes until everything is heated through.

Serve:

  • Serve hot with crusty bread, mashed potatoes, or a crisp side salad. Enjoy!
