Equipment

  • Saucepan
  • Pitcher
  • Muddler
  • Fine-mesh strainer
  • Knife
  • Cutting board
  • Blender (optional for slush version)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup fresh strawberries or thawed frozen
  • 1 cup fresh lemon juice about 5-6 lemons
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water for syrup
  • 3 cups cold water for dilution
  • 1/2 cup fresh basil leaves
  • Ice cubes preferably large
  • Extra basil strawberries, and lemon slices for garnish

Instructions

  • Make the basil simple syrup: In a saucepan, combine 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water. Heat until the sugar dissolves, then add basil leaves. Let steep for 15 minutes. Strain and let cool slightly.
  • Muddle the strawberries: In a large pitcher, lightly muddle strawberries to release their juices without turning them into complete mush.
  • Combine ingredients: Pour in the basil-infused syrup, fresh lemon juice, and 3 cups cold water. Stir well to combine.
  • Adjust to taste: Taste and adjust sweetness or lemon level as needed.
  • Serve: Add ice and garnish with fresh basil, strawberry slices, and lemon wheels.
  • (Optional variations) Sparkling version: replace some water with sparkling water. Adult version: add 1-2 oz vodka or gin per serving. Frozen slush: blend all ingredients with ice.

Notes

• Use lemon basil or Thai basil for unique flavor twists.
• Make the syrup up to a week ahead.
• Best enjoyed fresh but keeps for up to 4 days refrigerated.
