Ingredients
  

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour Use unbleached flour for best results.
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar For sweetness.

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon Adds warmth and flavor.
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg Optional but recommended.
  • 1/4 teaspoon allspice Optional for added spice.

Wet Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup cold unsalted butter, diced Chilled for a flaky texture.
  • 1/2 cup milk (whole or 2%) Can substitute with any milk alternative.
  • 1 large egg Provides richness.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Enhances flavor.

Cinnamon Sugar Topping

  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar For a sweet crust.
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon To pair with the sugar.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice. Mix well.
  • Add the diced cold butter into the dry ingredients and cut it in until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  • Pour the liquid mixture into the bowl of dry ingredients and stir gently until the dough comes together; it will be slightly sticky.
  • Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently until it holds together, without overworking it.
  • Pat the dough into a circle about 1 inch thick and 7 inches in diameter. Slice into 8 wedges.

Baking

  • Arrange the wedges on the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between each scone.
  • In a small bowl, mix the sugar and cinnamon for the topping and sprinkle over each scone.
  • Bake for 15-18 minutes, until golden brown and firm to the touch.
  • Remove from the oven and let cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

Notes

Store leftover scones in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, or freeze wrapped in plastic wrap for longer storage. Enjoy warm with butter or jam.
